Catherine Gallagher - Impact entrepreneurs need a community

Hello and welcome back to the impact goal rush podcast. I'm your host would time. This is the second episode. So if you if you miss the first episode, we had semi blender of the one drop movement. She talked about how dropping it forward is the key to creating more impact. If you missed that episode, you can go back to episode one to listen to semi. In Episode Number Two we have Catrine Gallagher, who runs the tonbridge wells entrepreneur social and rap point mentoring and she's got some very interesting stories around why it's so important to bring impact entrepreneurs together. So listening to understand why, as impact entrepreneurs, we need to be working collectively together. So, Catterine, welcome to the show. As we enter this entrepreneurship revolution. Why is it important for businesses to be doing good? Well, I think that if they're not doing good, they're not going to survive in the future and I think the businesses that that are doing good and showing positive social and environmental impact...

...are the ones that will not only survive but will thrive, because there's a there's a quite a lot of evidence that's growing to support that the businesses that are doing good are able to attract new clients more easily and also able to attract the best talent and retain good people as well. So it's looking at business figured her mystically. So you're looking at environmental and social impact and that includes inside the business, so with your employees, if you have employees, also with your suppliers and, of course, with your customers, and then outside of that as well. Could use share a bit why you think it's so important that the the sort of purpose in the impact is so crucial to the running a business. Well, firstly, to use the words of I think it was Roger Hamilton that said this, if you're not a social business, you're an antisocial business. And why it's important for businesses to have that...

...kind of I think it's just like and it's an inbuilt thing with so many people that are kind of becoming entrepreneurs. It's like a it's part of and it's kind of an extension of themselves. So yeah, in the UK ninety nine percent of businesses are small businesses, ninety six percent of micro businesses and from my experience a lot of them are solo prinners and they start their business because they want to do something that they love and they're sort of following a passion, but also because they really care and they really want to do something that's making a difference and because they're so purpose driven, they actually don't realize don't really fully under stand how to create a business model. That is, they don't even know what business model is. I didn't know what a business model was when, you know, when I started out, have a clue. I just knew that I wanted to run a business and make a difference.

So there's all these sort of businesses out there who just don't really understand the nuts and bolts of business and how to make a profit. So yeah, I think it's really important for to support those sort of businesses to help them to see that it's not just purpose but it's also profit. So it's kind of the MUP that it's changed from the olden days where everything was very, very profit driven, to now this sort of emergence of a new entrepreneur who's very purpose driven, and it's being able to help those purpose driven entrepreneurs see that by creating profit, they're actually able to generate and more of an impact and have more of an impact. So they helping themselves and they're helping the world as a result. So it's looking at the three P's of purpose, profit and planet. You've been running the royal time brute wells sourcial entrepreneurs, right. So why is it important bringing a community of impact entrepreneurs together? I well, I've loved bringing this community of impact onto players together because,...

...well, I've done a lot of networking over the years and and there's a lot of emphasis on on selling Your Business and pitching what you're doing and there's not, in my mind, so much around support generally, like business support and business growth. And so when I created the community of entrepreneurs that were impact driven around the Tombus Weld area, it was about bringing together like minded people and I think often the ones that are more impact driven. This is a bit of a generalization, but they're often because they're so purpose driven, they're not necessarily that profit driven, and so they need as much support as they can get to to help them to bring in the money, because if they're not bringing in the money then they're not they're not going to be able to fulfill that purpose driven side of what they're doing. So that's that's one aspect is sort of creating and giving that support, business support and community and I think being around bringing together like minded people where they can actually learn...

...from each other, they're able to be inspired by each other and feel connected and like they're part of a tribe, sort of sense of belonging and to learn and sort of best practice as well. And also, I think from the events that I've run I've got some really cool examples of how businesses have been inspired by the speakers that I've had. So, for example, we had cook food coming to speak and they're a be Corp and, if you don't know, be corpies are an amazing accreditation system which is incredibly thorough, and that how it really showcases businesses that are really doing good and giving all the evidence for that, and Cook a one of those companies. And my audience, a lot of them didn't know what be corps were. So they left kind of fit like with that sort of knowledge and and actually be caught.

For example, have a they've got like a way that you can kind of go through like a test without paying for anything, just kind of gives you an overview. So it may be enabled those sort of people to go off and do that and then one of them actually started to sort of go down the process of becoming a bee caught themselves. So yeah, that was cool. And then got really good example of this one of a company that I had as a speaker at one of the events that I co hosted recently. They're based in Kent as well, called REDDICO, and they are an IT SEO specialist, which is a notorious sort of industry in terms of there's there's not a huge amount of people that have that sort of talent. So anyway, they they they got a brilliant example of how they already like doing really well. They were getting brilliant feedback from their clients in terms of, you know, how good their work was that they've decided that they wanted to...

...really up their game in terms of how they looked after their staff off. So they've actually got a head of culture. That was luke. You spoke at the event that I ran the other day, and he along with the team, and this is one of the things, it's kind of getting the the importance of fission and and getting buy in from the leadership in terms of in terms of changing culture, because that is kind of basically what it is foreign. As for those established businesses anyway. They do. They look at the whole person when they recruit, when they take people on or well the existing staff, so they're not just there to do a job there. They look at them holistically and so they support them with their mental health and mental well being, which, my goodness, so important all the time, but especially this year, and they also look at the rest of their family. So they kind of see if there's other issues are going on like that can...

...they can support them with, and obviously their staff feel really supported in that respect. But the knock on effect of that, of course, is that they're more than likely producing better work, they're likely to retain their staff and attract new talent. So there's a really strong business case for it as well, and everyone on the call that I was on the other day we're talking about it as kind of employee Utopia, and I just think if if every business could kind of in bed that sort of where working, it would be so much better. My kind of latest thinking is that we're in a kind of pandemic of panic, of pressure. There's so much pressure in business and on people and it's surely not it's not sustainable. That's another way of looking at sustainability. So yeah, I think that's really, really important as well. So what is your number one advice on how entrepreneurs can be more impact driven? Am I only allowed to give one? Well, I would actually...

...say that the one thing I would do, and I have done in fact, is join beg one, because there are a social enterprise and it means that that you're it's what you can do. You basically embed giving into your business. So it means that every time someone buy something for me, someone somewhere else in the world benefits, but not just that. If you're so actually one of the companies that came again to one of my entrepreneur events. They have also signed up with bone g one. It's a really great way of introducing people to impact, like to to how they can embed impact into their work in a in a in a really easy way. They're Tagline, I think, is making giving simple. But it's so much more than, say, giving a donation to a charity once a year. It and you could it's very, very easy to measure and it's there for very easy to then communicate, so you can use it as a marketing tool as well.

Very simply. It's also a great way of helping to improve staff morale and you know, there's some really cool things that you can do in terms of helping with recruiting and attracting talent as well through that. So yeah, that's my one. That of advice is joined be one to you one, because it's like the easiest thing that you can do to start with. And then I would say doing the free assessment on the Be Corp website, which just kind of gives you a real good day view of all the different aspects that you can that you can sort of cover in your business, and then when you're when the time is right, kind of look down the be called reat or some other kind of accreditation like green globe.
